The Journey from Tradesman to Building Surveyor

By Bilal Kurdi, Assistant Building Surveyor

Tradies make up over 30% of the workforce according to Safe Work Australia and the most recent Census. That’s an impressive number, especially when you consider that many of them are running one of two million small businesses in Australia.

When you have been on the tools for a while, you tend to forget what happens behind the scenes. While working as a carpenter in the construction industry, I often wondered what goes on behind the scenes and how regulation pieces together.. On my journey to find out what really goes on, I became intrigued by the role and responsibilities of building surveyors and how they perceive the how’s, ifs, why’s and what’s of the construction sector.

After investigating the roles and responsibilities of a building surveyor, I came to realise that tradies endure more physical challenges.. Whereas a building surveyor pays specific attention to every detail; whether it is the assessment of architectural plans, Fire Engineering Reports, or the physicality of undertaking onsite inspections to determine any non-compliance within a variety of different classed buildings.

On my journey to secure a building surveyor role, I happened to come across an organisation which could help and develop such skills and knowledge required to be an exceptional building surveyor. Credwell Consulting has the tools, the people, the environment, and a wide variety of jobs for a determined individual to flourish as a building surveyor.

It has now been approximately 6 months that I have now been employed at Credwell Consulting. In saying that, my current perception of the construction sector as a carpenter transitioning to a building surveyor has changed drastically. With my pre-existing knowledge and skills obtained as a tradie I find it much easier to conform the tasks and roles of a building surveyor.  Through the guidance of the National Construction Code (NCC) and my amazing team and colleagues, I have learnt and absorbed so much useful knowledge to help me undertake tasks with ease and overcome challenges I never thought I would surpass. ‘Grateful’ is an understatement.

Through my recent experiences, I believe any determined individual, especially from a tradie background, would be capable of undertaking the role of a building surveyor provided they have the right tools, exceptional team, and a supportive environment such as Credwell Consulting.
